Government assurances that vaccine benefits outweigh risks for most people don’t comfort families of those who die after COVID-19 vaccination.
Advances in medical understanding of vaccine reactions helped a British Coroner’s Inquiry determine a woman’s death last year was due to an adverse reaction to her COVID-19 vaccination.
Kim Lockwood, 34, was a mother of two who lived with her family in Rotherham, England — a large town in South Yorkshire. She reportedly complained of an excruciating headache eight days after getting an AstraZeneca vaccination in March 2021. According to a BBC report, she quickly became much sicker and sought treatment at Rotherham Hospital where she was pronounced dead 17 hours after being admitted.
Evidence presented during the inquest determined that Lockwood first went to Rotherham Hospital on March 22 but left after a long wait, without being seen by care providers.
She returned the next morning suffering from debilitating headaches, blurred vision and vomiting, and by midday could not speak in full sentences, according to the BBC report.
By 2 a.m. on March 24 March, the mother-of-two was unresponsive and her family was called to say their goodbyes.
“South Yorkshire Coroner Nicola Mundy said Mrs. Lockwood had been “extremely unlucky”.
Doctor Mundy recorded the cause of death as Vaccine-Induced Thrombotic Thrombocytopenia (VITT) and returned a verdict of misadventure.
The U.S. National Center for Biotechnology Information described VITT “as a clinical syndrome” that entails the “development of thrombosis at uncommon sites” and may include cerebral venous sinus thrombosis or splanchnic venous thrombosis. Thrombosis is a condition where blood clots block veins or arteries, which reduces or prevents blood flow.
Lockwood’s husband, Damian, told British media his wife had complained “her head felt like it was going to explode.” Her father, Wayne Merrill, reportedly recalled her last words, which was that her headache was “actually killing her.”
“Kim’s pain wasn’t appropriately managed and the family should have been listened to,” Mundy reportedly said.
A family tribute read during the hearing said Lockwood was “kind, fun-loving and always the first and last on the dance floor at parties”. Mundy further noted Lockwood had donated her organs to medical research, a gesture she said “showed the kind of person Kim was”.
Lockwood’s family said after the hearing that she had died in agony and they had expressed concerns about her treatment.
They said they planned to pursue a medical negligence claim against the hospital trust.
