Senator Ted Cruz dismantled the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Director Christopher Wray at a Senate hearing on Thursday that veered heavily into the agency’s disturbing pattern of politicization and bias.
At one point in the hearing, Senator Cruz confronted Wray on an ‘astonishing’ coincidence in the FBI’s handling of the January 6 investigation. Watch:
“In Michigan, that case [the Whitmer kidnapping plot] ended up an absolute debacle where the four people who went to trial, two of them were acquitted,” Cruz said. “Two receive mistrials. None of them were convicted on even a single charge. And the basis of the defense was entrapment, that the FBI, that paid enforcements for the FBI, had suggested and had incited the conduct.”
“Let me ask you how many FBI agents were disciplined or reprimanded after that disastrous case and the misconduct that led to every defendant being acquitted or having a mistrial in every charge,” Cruz said.
“Senator I can’t comment on a personnel matter,” Wray replied. “I can tell you that, that case, as I understand it is now pending a retrial, as I understand.”
“Well, the special agent in charge of that case has now been sent to DC to the Washington DC office,” Cruz responded. “And now leads the investigation regarding January 6th. Is that correct?”
“That doesn’t sound right to me,” Wray replied carefully.
“That does not sound right,” Cruz repeated. “The name of the individual is Steven D’Antuono. He was, he was run out of the FBI Detroit field office. And by the way, I will point out that the lead investigator, Special Agent Trask, are you aware that he was apparently fired for allegedly beating his wife after coming home from a swinger’s party? And he’d made multiple derogatory political post about President Trump showing political bias. Are you aware of that?”
“I am aware of, I think the incident you’re describing, an action that was taken about it to clarify on the first part of your question,” Wray answered. “Mr. D’Antuono was the special agent in charge of the office, the Detroit field office, that is now the assistant director in charge of the Washington field office. I thought you were asking about the agent who was responsible for the…”
“So the guy in charge got promoted and is now in charge of the January 6th investigation,” Cruz said.
The guy in charge of the whole Detroit field office is now in charge of the whole Washington field office,” Wray said.
“That is astonishing.” Cruz replied.
Indeed, FBI Director Wray had promoted Steven D’Antuono, the special agent in charge of the Detroit Field Office, to become the assistant director in charge of the Washington Field Office in October 2020. That was the same month the FBI had announced the Whitmer kidnapping plot.
The Whitmer kidnapping plot produced a mistrial because the FBI’s case had included “confidential sources,” who pushed the invitation to commit criminal misconduct onto the unwitting targets, who had even resisted participating in the illegal scheme. The FBI’s tactics qualified as ‘entrapment.’
Now we know there is a golden thread that connects the disgraceful Whitmer kidnapping plot, a highly political case due to it involving the governor of Michigan ahead of the 2020 election, and the January 6 riot, which was conspicuously absent any reasonable law enforcement action that would prevent it from escalating into a national security debacle the Democratic Party would later characterize as an ‘insurrection.’
