PHILADELPHIA, PA – The City of Brotherly Love has broken a record from 1990 and it is not a good one. The grisly new record marks the most murders the city has seen in recorded history.

Philadelphia, as of December 31st, had reached 562 reported homicides for 2021, and there were still a few hours until the year ended.

The number of homicides that the city has seen has left many to no longer feel safe to live there or visit.

Fear is especially high in Germantown, where the residents talk about the sound of gunshots being so normal there, they teach their children and grandchildren to duck when the sounds are heard.

Helama Cannon spoke to 10 Philadelphia about her concerns and said:

“In our neighborhood when you hear gunshots we know to just roll on the floor and stay down.

I had to teach my grandchildren…when you hear gunshots, roll over and stay down until I tell you it’s ok. It makes you angry. You get fed up.”

City leaders had invested $155 million into different public safety programs, including $16 million that went specifically to neighborhood-based groups to fight violence throughout the city last budget cycle.

While those on the defund the police movement thought this type of approach would somehow lessen the violence, the number of homicides speak a different story, and it seems to be spilling over into the new year.

In the early morning hours of 2022, the city has seen multiple shootings and homicides. One of the shootings, which saw five people shot, two fatally, occurred in the 1600 block of Cecil B Moore Avenue which is near Temple University at a party celebrating the new year.

Philadelphia Police Inspector D. F. Pace noted that the two victims who died were shot multiple times.

The three who have survived were transported to a local hospital for medical treatment in a private vehicle, and they were last listed in stable condition. Pace said:

“What I can tell you is that the group was part of a larger group who were assembled here in this area for New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day festivities when they were shot.”

Sadly, this was not the last reported incident in which someone lost their lives in Philadelphia during the first few hours of the new year.

Pace also reported that there was a 33 year old man who was shot and killed and two 23 year old women who were injured at a different New Year’s Eve party.

According to Pace, the party appeared to be located at an auto parts business on the 100 block of East Luray Street. Pace believes that the shooter fired at least six rounds around 1:30 am.

The man was struck several times in the chest and the women once in the leg. The man died from his wounds and the women were listed in stable condition at Temple University Hospital.

Shooting violence like this has led people like Marla Davis Bellamy of Philadelphia CeaseFire to speak out. She said: [icon name=”arrow-right” prefix=”fas”] Read full story
