Is the Biden Administration Gearing Up for Climate Lockdowns?

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the left’s hunger for absolute power for all the world to see. Lockdowns, which studies now show did little if anything to stop deaths from the virus, decimated communities, destroyed businesses, compromised childhoods, and likely put health at risk. Almost three years after the outset of the pandemic and the beginning of COVID-19 lockdowns, the Biden administration is prepared to take its tactics to another level.

President Biden recently put out a “decarbonization” plan, which advises a “whole-of-government approach” to eliminate all greenhouse gas emissions. And you’ll never guess where the Biden administration gets its plans for how to do just that.

“Remote work and virtual interactions can provide a viable alternative to daily commute requirements for some people, as the COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated,” the report reads.

For many small businesses competing with companies like Amazon large enough to afford free, fast shipping to anywhere in the US, the prospect of an economy where no one drives longer than 15 minutes for a good or service is a bleak one.

“Once again, the Biden administration is blindly pursuing a ‘green’ agenda despite the unintended consequences it poses to the economy and, more specifically, small businesses,” Job Creators Network president Alfredo Ortiz told the Free Beacon. “Small businesses struggled to survive the pandemic and we don’t need to return to a similar environment in which in-person consumer demand is severely compromised.”

The United States Department of Energy touted the plan as the first step in a massive top-down governmental approach to solving climate change.

“Developed by the Departments of Energy, Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and the Environmental Protection Agency, the Blueprint is a landmark strategy for cutting all greenhouse emissions from the transportation sector by 2050,” the Department said in a press release. “It exemplifies the Biden-Harris Administration’s whole-of-government approach to addressing the climate crisis and meeting President Biden’s goals of securing a 100% clean electrical grid by 2035 and reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.”

The Biden administration has already framed the climate change “emergency” as a matter of “public health.”

“It is, therefore, the policy of my Administration to listen to the science; to improve public health and protect our environment; to ensure access to clean air and water; to limit exposure to dangerous chemicals and pesticides; to hold polluters accountable, including those who disproportionately harm communities of color and low-income communities,” a White House fact sheet read.

Once something has been established as a public health emergency, history teaches us that Democrats will stop at nothing to launch a totalitarian response.

The Brennan Center for Justice recently outlined a guide to the 148 statutory powers the president could command if he declared an emergency. The list includes a president’s right to seize farmland for “national defense purposes” and waiving a provision that a person doesn’t need to vacate a property seized for government purposes unless they can find a similar replacement place to live.

The “15-minute-city,” a utopian urban plan put forward by environmentalists in the West Midlands, is proving to be a disastrous minefield of totalitarian rules for those living in it. The idea of these cities seems simple enough at first blush — all the amenities needed for daily life, such as groceries, education, work and housing — are available within 15 minutes of each other. The plan, endorsed by none other than the World Economic Forum, has some saying it’s more of a jail than a walkable community.

Biden may be unable to institute complete climate change lockdowns in the last couple years of his presidency. But he could take radical steps towards such a future, and he seems prepared to do so. After the COVID-19 lockdowns that occurred in the name of public safety, a future Democrat administration could be more bold.
