Following India, Indonesia, and the Philippines, Slovakia has joined the countries for authorized Ivermectin use for the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) virus treatment and prophylaxis. 60 studies have produced overwhelmingly positive data indicating ivermectin-based efficacy and safety signals in the context of the CCP virus.
For months, India’s national authorities have authorized ivermectin as a regimen to be included targeting COVID-19, yet this authorization was then removed due in part to both internal and external political pressure. Now, Indonesia, the world’s fourth most populous nation’s regulatory authority has authorized ivermectin’s use in a major breakthrough for the drug’s role in the COVID-19 pandemic.
Now Indonesia is right in the middle of its most severe wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. To date, only 12.6 million people have been fully vaccinated in Indonesia, representing about 4.7% of the population. In the meantime, a third spike, on June 23, hit a record number of daily cases, 15,308.
BPOM, Acronym of the Minister for State Owned Enterprises (SOE), Indonesian national drug regulator declared that ivermectin 12 mg tablet is now registered in the nation for the indication of helminthiasis (Strongyloidiasis and Onchocerciasis). The product label calls for a dose of 150-200 mcg/kg body weight with the use of once per annum. It is only available in Indonesia via a licensed physician’s prescription. The drug regulatory agency cautioned that ivermectin’s long-term, uncontrolled use could lead to side effects including muscle/joint pain, skin rash, fever, dizziness, constipation.
The Philippines has taken a step closer to fully authorizing ivermectin for the use against SARS-CoV-2, the virus behind COVID-19. The Department of Health went on the record that the anti-parasitic drug can be used in “off-label” prescription targeting the coronavirus. Up until now, access to the drug for COVID-19 required compassionate use permits; to date, six hospitals secured such a status to access the drug for COVID-19 patients. Much like the case in America, a licensed physician may prescribe ivermectin off label at his/her own discretion in consultation with the patient. This is a change in direction from just several days ago, when the government was resisting authorization, as reported by TrialSite. Clearly, the government here is gearing up for a possible mass ivermectin treatment strategy while a large clinical trial involving the drug commences.
Recently, Slovakia became the First EU Nation to formally approve Ivermectin for both prophylaxis and treatment for COVID-19 Patients. A scientist from University of Toronto, Ondrej Halgas, expressed pride that his home country was able to become the very first nation in Europe to formally approve this drug as a complement to vaccines and other treatments. He was in touch with a physician group there that treated the elderly at a nursing home.
