On Mar. 8, 2021, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published a study which found that 78 percent of the people in the United States who have been hospitalized, placed on a ventilator or died as a result of COVID-19 were either overweight or obese.
Overweight or Obese People are Most at Risk for COVID-19
According to the CDC report, of the 148,494 adults who were diagnosed with COVID-19 during a visit to a hospital’s emergency department or an inpatient visit during March to December 2020, 71,491 were admitted to the hospital for care. Of those who were hospitalized, 27.8 percent were overweight and 50.2 percent were obese. The CDC defines overweight as having a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or more and obesity as having a BMI of 30 or more.
The latest data from the CDC estimates that, among American adults 20 years of age and over, 73.1 percent are overweight or obese, with 30.7 percent falling into the former category and 42.4 percent into the latter.
